{"id":452,"date":"2022-10-07T11:36:20","date_gmt":"2022-10-07T01:06:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/curric.theheights.sa.edu.au\/?page_id=452"},"modified":"2026-08-12T09:46:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T00:16:45","slug":"year-12-chemistry","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/curric.theheights.sa.edu.au\/?page_id=452","title":{"rendered":"Year 12 &#8211; Chemistry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Length:<\/strong> Full Year (20 SACE credits)<br><strong>Contact:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/curric.theheights.sa.edu.au\/?page_id=500\">Science Leader<\/a><br><br><strong>Recommended Background<br><\/strong><br>Grade B or higher in Stage 1 Chemistry.<br><br><strong>Course Description<br><\/strong><br>Through the study of Chemistry, students develop the skills that enable them to be questioning, reflective, and critical thinkers; investigate and explain phenomena around them; and explore strategies and possible solutions to address major challenges now and in the future (for example, in energy use, global food supply, and sustainable food production).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stage 2 Chemistry topics provide the framework for developing integrated programs of learning through which students extend their skills, knowledge, and understanding of the three strands of science.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three strands of science to be integrated throughout student learning are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Science inquiry skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Science as a human endeavour<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Science understanding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Stage 2 Chemistry students study the following topics:<br><br>Topic 1: Monitoring the Environment<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topic 2: Managing Chemical Processes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topic 3: Organic and Biological Chemistry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topic 4: Managing Resources<br><br><strong>Assessment<\/strong><br><br>Students\u2019 performance will be determined according to the subject\u2019s Performance Standards, as outlined by the SACE Board. Grades A+ to E- will be used for reporting purposes.<br><br><strong>School-based Assessment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Investigations Folio (30%): This includes 2 Investigations, one Deconstruction Design and one Science as a Human Endeavour.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skills and Applications Tasks (40%): including four tests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>External Assessment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examination (30%).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Length: Full Year (20 SACE credits)Contact: Science Leader Recommended BackgroundGrade B or higher in Stage 1 Chemistry.
