Course Description

Students study Outdoor Education over a single semester at Year 10. The study of Outdoor Education provides students with opportunities to experiences personal growth and to develop social skills, self-confidence, self-reliance, initiative, leadership, and collaboration skills. Students learn about environmental sustainability and cultural perspectives. Students develop skills in a variety of fields, such as navigation, teamwork, leadership and camp craft.

As part of learning, students experience outdoor experiences in natural environments, with a minimum of 3 day excursions.

Activities for Stage 1 could include:

  • Orienteering
  • Rock-Climbing
  • Aquatics
  • Camp Cooking


Assessment

Year 10 Students are assessed according to the HPE Achievement Standards outlined in the Australian Curriculum, with A-E Grades used for reporting. Students will be assessed through assignments based on key theory concepts and their application in practical settings.

Task focuses will be:

  • Outdoor Skill Improvement
  • Group Dynamics and Leadership
  • Perspectives of Outdoor Environments
  • Menu Planning and Outdoor Cooking

Note: As the course does involve external activities there is a requirement to charge an additional cost of $120 to cover subject related expenses. No refunds will be given if a student withdraws from the course or does not attend an excursion without a medical certificate.

This is due to costs being calculated and bookings made for each activity before the semester starts. Students choosing this course must be prepared to fully commit themselves to the various activities involved in Outdoor Education. They will be accountable to themselves and to the class for appropriate participation and completion of these activities.
