Length: Full Year
Course Description:
Year 8 English will be delivered using the Australian Curriculum and will build on skills and understandings developed in earlier years. Students will continue to enhance their knowledge, understanding, and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing, and creating. Learning in English is cumulative, with concepts, skills, and processes revisited and strengthened as students progress through the course.
Students will explore, interpret, evaluate, discuss, create, and perform a variety of texts. These may include novels, poetry, non-fiction, dramatic performances, media texts (including film, online, and digital formats), and multimodal compositions. Themes and issues will encourage students to engage in higher-order thinking, abstraction, and intertextual analysis. Students will deepen their understanding of how texts are shaped by language, context, and visual and audio features.
Year 8 students will create a diverse range of texts, with purposes such as imaginative, aesthetic, reflective, informative, persuasive, and analytical communication. This may include narratives, arguments, reviews, literary analysis, and transformed texts tailored for various audiences and contexts.
Assessment
Year 8 Students are assessed according to the English Achievement Standards outlined in the Australian Curriculum, with A-E Grades used for reporting. This includes assessment of achievement in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating
