Year 8 – English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD)

Length: Full Year

Course Description:

Year 8 EAL aims to support students in further developing their spoken and written English proficiency through targeted learning aligned with the Australian Curriculum. The program focuses on nurturing student competence in listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing, and creating. Building on foundational skills from previous years, students enhance their English language understanding, preparing them for increasingly complex communication contexts.

Students engage actively with a diverse range of texts for enjoyment and practical purposes. They will listen to, read, view, write, respond to, interpret, and evaluate various spoken, written, digital, and multimodal texts aimed at entertaining, informing, and persuading. The course fosters critical awareness of text types, including contemporary media, and promotes the development of meaningful and effective communication skills across multiple settings.

Assessment

Year 8 Students are assessed according to the English Achievement Standards outlined in the Australian Curriculum, with A-E Grades used for reporting. This includes assessment of achievement in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.
