Recommended Background
No prerequisites.

Satisfactory completion of Stage 1 Engineering & Drafting (CAD) is recommended. Those with no experience will be supported through the basics.

Course Description
Stage 2 Engineering & Drafting (CAD) provides students with opportunities to develop and apply skills in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), drafting, prototyping, and design communication. Students explore how design technologies are used across a range of industries, including product design, engineering, architecture, manufacturing, and electrotechnology.

Students will learn to create detailed 3D models and technical drawings using industry-standard CAD software, develop design solutions that respond to authentic design challenges, and produce prototypes that communicate and test their ideas. Prototypes may take the form of CAD-based models, CAM products, architectural concepts, electronic systems, or a combination of these approaches.

The course emphasises the design process, including research, ideation, modelling, testing, evaluation, and refinement. Students develop technical and creative problem-solving skills while gaining experience in communicating design solutions through drawings, digital models, prototypes, and presentations.

Assessment
Student achievement is assessed against the relevant Performance Standards outlined for the Design, Technology & Engineering SACE subject, with A+ to E- Grades used for reporting purposes.

School-based Assessment:

  • Two Specialised Skills Tasks (20%): (Consists of 1200 words written or equivalent in multimodal form)
    • Skills Task 1 – CAD Modelling & Drafting: Students demonstrate their ability to produce accurate and detailed CAD models and associated technical drawings.
    • Skills Task 2 – Prototype Development: Students demonstrate their ability to interpret technical plans (working drawings, schematics, etc) and produce a prototype.
  • Design Process (Folio) and Solution (50%): Students undertake a design project in response to a design challenge or client need. Students must show evidence of the design process in which they showcase and evaluate their product. (Consists of 3000 words written or equivalent in multimodal form).

External Assessment:
Resource Study (30%): Comprises of the following 2 parts:

  • Part One: Resource Investigation
  • Part Two: Issue Study.

The Resource Study consists of 2000 words written or equivalent presented in multimodal form.
