Course Description
Community Café Enterprise is an innovative Stage 1 Integrated Learning course designed to provide students with an opportunity to develop employability skills, entrepreneurial thinking and enterprise capabilities through the design, operation and continuous involvement in a functioning school café.
As part of the course, students will complete mandatory accredited barista training, gaining an industry-recognised certificate that strengthens their vocational pathways and workplace readiness. Students will be continuously developing transferable skills in communication, customer service, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and time management.
Throughout the year, students will take on an entrepreneurial mindset by completing a variety of task to help them independently and collaboratively establish and contribute to a successful community café. They will undertake a variety of task which enable them to solve issues and explore topics surrounding business management, practical skills, marketing, and finance.
Students will build on their workplace experiences by taking ownership of café operations. They will apply entrepreneurial thinking by developing a proposal for reinvesting the cafés profits to improve either customer experience, or business functionality, by presenting their ideas to a panel. Throughout the course, students will document their learning through reflective journals, demonstrating how authentic workplace experiences have developed their enterprise capabilities, collaboration skills and understanding of community-focused businesses. Students will also investigate and connect to world-wide coffee delicacies. The course empowers students to become confident contributors who can recognise opportunities, solve real-world problems and create value for both their community and future workplaces
Note: Students may be required to attend before-school lessons at most 1 day a week for café operations.
Note: Students may be required to contribute to cost of external training for recognised qualifications.
Assessment
Student achievement is assessed against the relevant Performance Standards outlined for the Child Studies SACE subject, with A-E Grades used for reporting purposes.
